The Year 1971:

  • The Weather Underground Organization bombed the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. in March, causing $300,000 worth of damage.

  • On 01 January cigarette advertisement is banned on TV.

  • Jim Morrison of the Doors is found dead of a drug overdose in Paris, France. 

  • On April 20 the Supreme Court said it's okay to bus schoolchildren to other schools in order to integrate schools in Swan v. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education. 

  • On June 13 the Pentagon Papers gave details of the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War.

  • 26th Amendment was passed on July 1. This was the first time citizens could vote at the age of 18, instead of 21. 

  • Disney World opened on October 1 in Orlando, Florida. 
    Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Baltimore Orioles in the World Series. 

  • Hot pants were popular. 

  • National Women's Political Caucus was founded to encourage more women to get involved in politics. Its founders were Betty Friedan, Gloria Steinem, Bella Abzug and Shirley Chisholm. 

  • The CAT Scan was invented. 

  • The film Shaft was released. It was one of the first films to feature a black hero. 

  • Pierre Verdon invented the food processor. 

  • Mariner 9 orbited Earth. 

  • Intel Corporation built 1st commercial microprocessor.

  • James Cash (J.C.)  Penny dies 12 February in New York at the age of 95.

  • Phyllis Ann George born 25 June 1949, Miss Texas is crowned Miss USA at the age of 20.
