Obituary
  Robert Newell Taft

Robert Newell Taft died November 26, 2006, of cancer at his Corpus Christi home.   Born November 7, 1948, in Honolulu, Hawaii, he was
the son of Captain Donald M. Taft, Jr. (USMC retired), who preceded him in death, and  Helen Gene Manning Taft.  He was the
grandson of Lt. Colonel Donald M. Taft (USMC retired) and Winter Marie Davis, Houston and Guy Stuart Manning
and Blanche DeArman Heiling, Corpus Christi, Texas.

Bob attended Havelock High School in Havelock, NC, transferred and then graduated from Richard King High School, where he played
on the varsity golf team, and attended Del Mar College.  He was general manager with Red Carpet Car Wash, Inc. for over fifteen years
and later held quality control supervisory positions with  Main Tech International.

Bob brightened the lives of those who knew him with his warm sense of humor and his kind and caring spirit. His random acts of
kindness, even towards total strangers, earned him an invitational appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show in 1990.  His lifelong
skill at golf and his love of the sport won him both many friends and numerous awards, including the North Shore Country Club
Men’s Championship in 2000. And, while most men are fortunate to have even a single talent at which they excel, Bob was blessed
with two gifts that defined him as a person: he was not only a superb golfer but  he was also truly gifted as a selfless husband and
soul mate to his beloved Lydia. For his Lydia, there was no sacrifice too great, no interest unshared, no term of endearment unspoken.
He made every day Valentine’s Day and their home, her castle.  Bob was proud of his "Taft" heritage and assembled a large collection
of historical, political, and genealogical memorabilia representing the long and distinguished history of the family in America.

He is survived by his devoted wife Lydia Ann,   his daughter Amber (Kyle) Cook of Katy, his mother Helen Taft and his brother
Donald M. Taft III (Susan), of Corpus Christi and his sister Patricia Matula (C.M.) of Clute.  He is also survived by five grandchildren:
Abigail, Madeline, Caleb, Seth and Micah Cook, of Katy;  nieces: Amy (Kenny) Koch of Corpus Christi and Wynter (Bill) Little
of Houston, and nephews:  Josh (Erin ) Taft and Edward Taft  of Corpus Christi, Andrew Taft of Austin, Christian (Tomiko) Taft
of Santa Barbara, California, Donald (Melondie) Matula of Loveland, Colorado, Rusty (Diane), Billy (Evelyn) and Michael Matula
of Clute; and cousins:  Dr. William T. Lee (Sammie), New Braunfels,  Reverend Don Lee (Karen), Bandera and Michael  S. Lee,
Corpus Christi; grand nephews Kevin and Michael Koch, Justin, Lonni, Rodney, Coy, Jake, Christopher, Brandy, Michael Matula
and Grace Little.

Friends and family are invited  to commemorate Bob’s life at a Memorial Service Sunday, December 3, 2006  at 1:00 PM at
Seaside Memorial Park Chapel, with Father Michael Cannon as celebrant.
